The Maker Of The Universe (Hymn)

The Maker Of The Universe
(Hymn by Frederick William Pitt)

The Maker of the universe
As Man, for man was made a curse.
The claims of law which He had made,
Unto the uttermost He paid.

His holy fingers made the bough
Which grew the thorns that crowned His brow.
The nails that pierced His hands were mined
In secret places He designed.

He made the forest whence there sprung
The tree on which His body hung.
He died upon a cross of wood,
Yet made the hill on which it stood.

The sky that darkened o’er His head
By Him above the earth was spread.
The sun that hid from Him its face
By His decree was poised in space.

The spear which spilled His precious blood
Was tempered in the fires of God.
The grave in which His form was laid,
Was hewn in rocks His hands had made.

The throne on which He now appears
Was His from everlasting years.
But a new glory crowns His brow.
And every knee to Him shall bow.

Sometimes A Light Surprises (Hymn)

Sometimes A Light Surprises
(Hymn by William Cowper)

Sometimes a light surprises
The Christian while he sings;
It is the Lord who rises
With healing on His wings;
When comforts are declining,
He grants the soul again
A season of clear shining,
To cheer it after rain.

In holy contemplation
We sweetly then pursue
The theme of God's salvation,
And find it ever new;
Set free from present sorrow,
We cheerfully can say,
E'en let the unknown to-morrow
Bring with it what it may!

It can bring with it nothing,
But He will bear us through;
Who gives the lilies clothing,
Will clothe His people too;
Beneath the spreading heavens
No creature but is fed;
And He who feeds the ravens
Will give His children bread.

Though vine nor fig tree neither
Their wonted fruit shall bear,
Though all the field should wither,
Nor flocks nor herds be there:
Yet God the same abiding,
His praise shall tune my voice;
For, while in Him confiding,
I cannot but rejoice.

Matthew 6:25-33 Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature? And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith? Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

 Habakkuk 3:17-19 Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls: Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation. The LORD God is my strength, and he will make my feet like hinds' feet, and he will make me to walk upon mine high places. To the chief singer on my stringed instruments.

The Light In The Darkness (Song)

The Light In The Darkness

Struggling within my darkness,
Feeling hopelessly lost and alone;
Oftimes I fear the voice that I hear
Crying out aloud is my own.

Shattering the silence,
Wondering if I can ever find
Someone who cares and would even dare|
To give me hope and peace of mind.

And reaching out in the darkness,
Calling out to be heard,
There’s a shining Light that breaks through my night,
Coming from within Your Holy Word.

Reaching out through the darkness
Is the Saviour who died for me -
A prisoner within, enslaved to my sins -
But Jesus came to make me free.

Like a Good Shepherd searching
For the lost sheep that had gone astray,
He heard my cry, came down from on High,
And sought me out that day.

Now there’s hope beyond the shadows -
A Light shining out for all to see;
I see the Man with nail-pierced hands,
The Saviour who died to rescue me.

Jesus broke through all my darkness
When I heard the Gospel sound;
Now I know His voice, and I truly rejoice:
The lost sheep has now been found.

The Light is shining in your darkness,
Reaching out and seeking too;
God came near, and the voice you hear
Is the Good Shepherd calling you.

Luke 15:4-7 What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find it? And when he hath found it, he layeth it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he cometh home, he calleth together his friends and neighbours, saying unto them, Rejoice with me; for I have found my sheep which was lost. I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance.

Revelation 2:28 [And he that overcometh], I will give him the Morning Star.

Revelation 22:16 I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.

2 Peter 1:19 We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:

Luke 2:9-14 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

John 1:4-5, 9 In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not… That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.

John 8:12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

Have You Any Room For Jesus? (Hymn/Devotional)

 Have You Any Room For Jesus?

It is almost Christmas once again. Looking forward to time we will spend with family and friends. All too often we forget the meaning behind this holiday - the meaning we say we are celebrating Christmas for!

In the book of Luke, we see how their Heavenly Father worked out all things so that Jesus would be born of a virgin and be born in Bethlehem, in fulfilment of prophecy.

Luke 2:1-5 And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.

But all was not as rosy as it appeared. After travelling for days to get to Bethlehem, the married couple could not find anywhere to rest for the night.

Luke 2:6-7 And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

Just like in Bethlehem 2000 years ago, even today the world doesn't have any room for Jesus. Yes, we have time for a holiday, to think about a little baby and what happened that long ago night - but all too often we don't think about the reason Jesus came to Earth as a baby: in order to one day die for our sins, He needed to become one of us. This baby was born, so He could grow up and one day be crucified. The world doesn't like to think about that part. The world is guilty before God, and in need of a Saviour, but the world would rather just think about the cute little baby.

Thirty three years later, Jesus did die on that cross for the sins of the world; He was buried; and He did arise physically from the grave after three days and nights. He is the Saviour that the Bible prophesied about and clearly proclaims that He is - rising from the dead is proof positive of who He is and the fact that He did pay the complete penalty that we deserved for our sins.

Yet, the world still has no room for Jesus. How about you? Is there any room in your heart and home for the Saviour this Christmas season (and all year round)?

We often think of Christmas gifts that we give to our loved ones. God gave the greatest gift we will ever need. You can turn to Him today and receive His free gift of salvation. It is a gift that cannot be earned, it must be received by faith. That means believing and trusting what God has already said in His Word - that Jesus will save all those who turn from their sins and turn to the Saviour. He offers you the gift of forgiveness, eternal life, a home eternally in Heaven with Him.

But just like any other gift, it must be received to be yours.

Will you receive Jesus Christ as your Saviour? Do you have any room for Him?

Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

John 1:12 But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name:

Revelation 3:20 Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear My voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with Me.

Ephesians 3:17 That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love,

Have You Any Room For Jesus?
(Words adapted by Daniel W. Whittle)

Have you any room for Jesus,
He who bore your load of sin?
As He knocks and asks admission,
Sinners, will you let Him in?

Chorus:
Room for Jesus, King of Glory!
Hasten now His Word obey;
Swing the heart's door widely open,
Bid Him enter while you may.

Room for pleasure, room for business,
But for Christ the Crucified,
Not a place that He can enter,
In the heart for which He died?

Have you any room for Jesus,
As in grace He calls again?
O today is time accepted,
Tomorrow you may call in vain.

Room and time now give to Jesus,
Soon will pass God's day of grace;
Soon thy heart left cold and silent,
And thy Savior's pleading cease.

We Three Kings Of Orient Are (Hymn)

We Three Kings Of Orient Are
(Author: John H. Hopkins)

We three kings of Orient are;
Bearing gifts we traverse afar,
Field and fountain, moor and mountain,
Following yonder star.

Refrain:
O star of wonder, star of light,
Star with royal beauty bright,
Westward leading, still proceeding,
Guide us to thy perfect light.

Born a King on Bethlehem's plain,
Gold I bring to crown him again,
King forever, ceasing never,
Over us all to reign.

Frankincense to offer have I;
Incense owns a Deity nigh;
Prayer and praising, voices raising,
Worshiping God on high.

Myrrh is mine; its bitter perfume
Breathes a life of gathering gloom;
Borrowing, sighing, bleeding, dying,
Sealed in the stone-cold tomb.

Glorious now behold him arise;
King and God and sacrifice:
Alleluia, Alleluia,
Sounds through the earth and skies.

True Perseverance (Poem)

Calvinism is such a prevailing doctrine, I might as well give into the pressure. I totally 100% believe the lines of this poem I have written. I have truly come to believe the doctrine of Perseverance. Please read this whole post - I think you might come to agree with me after you read it all.

True Perseverance

Holding on when all else fails;
Holding on when all seemed lost;
Grasping firmly with determination -
Holding on despite the cost.

Holding on when we falter;
Holding on against the flow;
Holding tightly with your hands -
Holding on, never letting go.

Grasping tightly and holding on;
Persevering by your might;
Holding on with all you have -
Grasping on, and holding tight!

Oh, sometimes I think I mixed up the perseverance of the saints with the preservation of the saints. Now read the full poem - AND NOTICE THAT THE FIRST THREE STANZAS ARE UNCHANGED.

True Perseverance

Holding on when all else fails;
Holding on when all seemed lost;
Grasping firmly with determination -
Holding on despite the cost.

Holding on when we falter;
Holding on against the flow;
Holding tightly with your hands -
Holding on, never letting go.

Grasping tightly and holding on;
Persevering by your might;
Holding on with all you have -
Grasping on, and holding tight!

It’s not my grasp on my Saviour,
That keeps me safe, day by day -
It’s the Lord holding onto me,
Even when I struggle or stray.

It’s not that I have Jesus,
And I am holding Him so tight -
It’s those nail-pierced hands that hold me;
Hold me close, through darkest night.

He is holding onto me -
That is salvation, tried and true
It’s not that you are holding onto Jesus -
But that He is holding onto you.

Now go back and read those first lines,
Consider them through the eyes of faith;
Your Heavenly Father is holding you -
Keeping you forever by His grace!

Holding on when all else fails;
Holding on when all seemed lost;
Grasping firmly with determination -
Holding on despite the cost.

Holding on when we falter;
Holding on against the flow;
Holding tightly with Your hands -
Holding on, never letting go.

Grasping tightly and holding on;
Persevering by Your might;
Holding on with all You have -
Grasping on, and holding tight!

Jesus Christ paid the cost,
And He is holding onto you -
Forever!

“When you and I arrive in heaven, my dear friends, we’ll realize that we’re not there because we held on when others gave up, but because he held on to us.” - Martyn Lloyd-Jones.

John 10:28-30 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand. I and my Father are one.

Romans 8:35, 38-39 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?… For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Notice the progression of faith:

Song of Songs 2:16 My beloved is mine, and I am his: he feedeth among the lilies.

Song of Songs 6:3 I am my beloved's, and my beloved is mine: he feedeth among the lilies.

Song of Songs 7:10 I am my beloved's, and his desire is toward me.

I am His!

The Fingerprints Of God (Poem)

The Fingerprints Of God

Searching for God’s presence, looking all around,
Seeking out the evidence, and examining what I’ve found,
Considering the heavens, the sun, the moon, the stars -
And realizing the Creator loves us, and reaches down to where we are.

There are fingerprints of God all throughout my life;
In the times of victory, and in the times of strife.
When I gaze through all my past, I may not always understand -
But it’s clear the Lord has a purpose, and I am part of that plan.

Though I may not see clearly all the paths He has led me through,
I can see His hand of mercy, His presence in every part I view.
I have never been alone - though I did not know it then,
His love has been ever seeking me, like a Shepherd, like a friend.

When I saw my sin in His sight, how I had wandered from God’s throne,
My Heavenly Father took me in, and welcomed me to His home;
Like the prodigal son, I came running to the Lord for grace;
Accepted in the Beloved, when I trusted Jesus Christ by faith.

The footsteps of the Saviour led me onward from that day;
And one day up in glory, I know I’ll be able to say,
“With God’s fingerprints on my heart, and His mercy from above,
I know I am forever God’s child, because of His grace and of His love.”

(Dedicated to my friend and brother in Christ, Craig Watson)

From Craig - “I always tell my dad God left breadcrumbs leading to Him. And they had His fingerprints all over them .”

Psalms 8:3-4 When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?

1 Corinthians 15:10 But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.

The Greatest Story Ever Told (Poem)

The Greatest Story Ever Told

Awestruck and wonder-filled, we slowly gaze around;
Feel the light patter of the snow gently falling down.
Cheerful children laughing and playing without a care,
While smells of Christmas waft upon the wintery air.
Songs of the season sound serenely throughout the night,
All of these sensations touch our souls with joy and delight.

Feel the warmth of the crackling fire as you come in from the cold;
Sense the wonder and the thrill of The Greatest Story Ever Told.
Sit back and listen while your hearts fill with utter joy;
Hear the Gospel writers tell of the birth of a little Boy.
Not just any boy, mind you - listen, and let your imagination unfurl;
In Bethlehem was born the Son destined to change the world.

Picture the scene in your mind of God coming down to earth -
Not in majesty or splendour, but by a lowly birth;
Surrounded by rustling animals in a manger filled with hay;
No room for them in the inn, from its shelter they were turned away.
Feel the nip in the air, and hear the silence broken by a cry -
The cry of the Baby born, the Baby born to die.

"For unto you is born this day…
…a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord."

He came to fulfill the prophecies all the prophets had foretold;
From the foundation of the world, His suffering was planned of old;
From the first couple in the garden to the last soul ever born,
The Messiah would bear their sins and sorrows, with cruelty and scorn.
On the wooden cross He shed His blood, by Him the wrath of God was borne;
Till another cry broke through the silence, and the temple veil was torn.

“…and thou shalt call his name JESUS:
for he shall save his people from their sins.”

“It is finished,” cried out Jesus, and died that very hour -
But three days later, the Son of God arose again in power.
“It is finished” - the tomb is empty, go to the brethren and tell:
“He is not here: for He is risen” - He shook the very gates of Hell.
Jesus Christ died for all our sins - that is the Gospel story;
Go tell it boldly to the world - the Saviour arose again in glory.

“It is finished!”

Matthew 1:18-25 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost. Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away privily. But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife: And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.

It Is Written, It Is Written (Song)

It Is Written, It Is Written

There is a Book that God has written;
To it, no other can compare.
Its chapters tell us of the Saviour
In the pages written there:
Jesus is the song of sages,
He’s the Bible’s central theme.
In the glory of the ages,
It is written for all to see.

(Chorus)
It is written, it is written,
There is a plan for you and me.
It is written, it is written,
The Saviour came to make us free.
Held so long by sin’s oppression,
From our slavery we are freed;
Why wander about in darkness -
Oh, take up the Book and read!

For so many years I have wandered,
Lost in the maze of uncertainty;
I have searched so long for answers,
Puzzled at the depths of misery.
There are questions I have wondered,
What of my future? I cannot see -
But when I read the Bible for myself,
The mysteries become clear to me.

Jesus is the only Saviour;
He died for Adam’s sinful race.
He suffered on the cruel cross -
The Substitute in our place.
By His blood, He paid our ransom;
By His death, He made us free;
But the Bible’s story doesn’t end there -
|Jesus Christ arose in victory.

There is no gospel written in the stars -
Of our redemption they cannot tell;
But the Bible has been written
To rescue souls on their way to Hell.
Genesis to Revelation
Declare it plainly for all to see:
Jesus Christ is the only Saviour,
And He gives life eternally.

In the glory of its pages,
It is written for all to see…

2 Peter 1:19-21 We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

The Scriptures are objective truth - the light shining in the darkness - because they tell of THE Light, the Lord Jesus Christ, and the salvation found in Him.

Isaiah 34:16a Seek ye out of the book of the LORD, and read...
